The Nike Swoosh logo is one of the best-known symbols in the world. Carolyn Davidson, a young student at Portland State University as graphic designer, created it in 1971 for only 35$.
The legend says that Phil Knight, the co-founder of Nike, had a bunch of logo designs in front of him, but he had no idea which one to choose. However, the shoes boxes were waiting to be fabricated in Mexico and urgently needed a logo.
He finally picked one and said, "I don't love it, but it will grow on me." This fast decision was the best that could have been made. The Nike swoosh, as mentioned, is today recognized by millions of people all over the world.
Later on, in 1983, when Nike became a huge company, Knight rewarded Carolyn Davidson by giving her a secret amount of Nike’s stock and a diamond ring with a swoosh.
The Nike Swoosh logo was first used in 1972 on the athletic shoes of those participating at the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon.
The logo was originally referred to as “the stripe”. Later on, it was named “Swoosh”. Most likely, the term is a borrowed word used by the “Blue Ribbon Sports” company, the predecessor of Nike, to describe a shoe.
Today, no item leaves the factories without at least one swoosh on it. Many people love to customize them. They either change the color or even replace the logo with a complete leather swoosh to individualize their sneakers. |
