What combination will make you most comfortable?

I wear bootcut jeans a lot, so this is my area of expertise. I love them because they make my feet look solid, masculine. I hate it when I see men wearing skinny jeans.  Leave that to the ladies, guys! They have the bodies for that. We don’t!

So what are some models that will make you look and feel great in them jeans?

In my experience, anything from Vans, DC or just any other bulky shoes go perfectly with bootcuts.

I have a pair of Toni Trujillo Vans, which is awesome. There’s no other word to describe it!  Truth be told, that pair is fantastic no matter what I wear. I could well go out wearing these sneakers with just a pair of boxers and people would still throw compliments on my style.

Even the classic Vans Slip-On will go perfectly with your jeans.

Heck, is there anything that doesn’t go well with a pair of Vans? Maybe your business suit… But I’m sure you could eventually find a way to make that work too

You could also look into Air Jordan sneakers. With these, however, I can’t think of any other type of jeans that you could wear them. Anything other than bootcuts will just look silly.

What’s the problem with bootcuts?

I’ve seen people complain that some shoes make their feet look big, especially when they wear a small size. Come on, when you’re wearing bootcut jeans, what do really expect? They already make your feet look stumpy. If you put a pair of shoes just to make your feet look small, it will only look weird.

If you go for pair of Chucks or something similar, not only will it make you look like walking on toothpicks, but you’ll also ruin your jeans. I know I did this and I looked so out of place and I kept dragging my pants on the floor.

What you need to look for is a pair of shoes that is bulky enough, so it won’t look stupid. Also, you need one that has a heel large enough to hold the jeans from dragging on the floor.

If we’re to follow what the new partnership between Nike and Liberty of London brings to life, we’d start believing that we can continue being little kids way up into adulthood.

Really! How else can you explain what they came up with? Take a look at the sneakers below and tell me that’s not something that you wore when you were first learning to walk?

They took the original Air Approach 2.4 and turned it into a botanic garden. The sneakers come in two floral colorways, one blue and the other red. They say that they’re good for men and women alike, but I have some reserves about that:)

The midsoles are white, the only sane thing about this shoe I could find.

What’s certain however is that they way out there and we won’t see to many on the streets any time soon. They’re probably a limited edition which will have its run for a couple of months before going back to the museum of lost sneakers

Then pay attention because Adidas has reintroduced one of its star models from the 70s. The awesome Adidas Kopenhagen is now back to life and ready to rock the world once again.

Named after the capital of Denmark, the shoe was first released in 1978 and has a very nice run for a number of years. It was many people’s favorite until Adidas took them off thee market.

This fall, Adidas brought them back to life as a retro in the City series, in a variety of colorways, including gray and legacy blue, navy with dark orange stripes and heel, sunshine with black and some others. They all feature a cool textured tongue.

I think that the black and metal grey with a small touch of orange at the heel is the coolest colorway of all. It looks like coming from space. It features a waxed canvas upper with yellow metal lace eyelets.

Adidas sure went out of its way to make sure that only a few people can get their hands on them. Only a handful of stores got the Kopenhagen and hunting for a pair is quite an adventure.

The best chance is to find them on eBay where they sell for about $150, with some models going up to $200.

This shoes look so out there that you’d think they are actually a pair of moccasins. Well, they’re certainly a little out of the ordinary.

They feature this slightly oversized sole that’s giving them a great personality. It’s made of high quality rubber that offers great adherence to any surface. It also makes them super flexible.

There’s also a nice patch of suede that goes all way round the shoe, giving it a very soft feel.

It’s been originally available in three colorways, but I think there are more these days.

Apparently, the Tsunahiki is a replica of a shoe that’s been designed for tug of war games in the Olympics in the early twentieth century. Others say it was designed for the 1982 Olympics. Who really knows?

Reebok really got burnt on this one. Ouch!

Remember that Reebok launched its revolutionary EasyTone sneakers about two years ago, which were as revolutionary as you can imagine.

With scientifically proven technologies and groundbreaking designs, they were supposed to get your buttocks up to 28 percent firmer.

Now who on earth could pass on such an opportunity?

Not many, as it turns out. The sales of EasyTone and RunTone were skyrocketing and Reebok kept pumping millions of dollars in promotional campaigns that promised that magic 28 percent improvement.

Well, as time passed and more and more people got in on that, complaints started coming in. It seemed that the magic sneakers weren’t delivering the results promised.

If it were just one consumer complaining, they could have simply sent her off claiming she didn’t wear the shoes according to the specifications. But that wasn’t the case. There wasn’t just one unhappy customer. There were hundreds.

Well, the situation finally got to the ears of the FTC who started an investigation.

Surprise!

Following the examination, the FTC concluded that the EasyTone shoes were no more effective in toning your buttocks than just about any other sports shoe out there. At best, they were only somewhat more comfortable during exercise than the competition.

And the science behind the shoe? The one that got the magic number 28? There was none. It was something cooked up by marketing to make it sound believable.

What this means is that Reebok was fined 25 million dollars for making false claims in their advertisement.

Ouch!

Reebok is now supposed to refund the money to any unhappy customer. Also, they’re not allowed to make unproven claims in their future promotional campaigns.

Watch out Skechers or MBT, because they’re coming after you next!

MBT was the first firm to catch on this trend, back in 2005. They launched a line of sneakers with seriously misshaped soles that would work your back muscles and help you improve your posture. They were even featured on Dr. Phil.

The next were the Skechers ShapeUps which I thought were a complete copy of MBT. They’re also selling great, but they should be a little more careful about their claims from now on

What’s to learn from all of this?

I think we should all understand that a pair of sneakers is just a piece of clothing that helps you exercise. It’s not gong to magically reshape your body doing nothing.

It was not the Puma Street Yaam shoes that won Usain Bolt the title of “Fastest man on Earth”. It was his talent, exercise and of course, genetics.

Don’t put your trust into some magic products.

First of all, from the front, they’re almost identical. The texture on the sole is also a perfect copy. Both shoes feature a zigzag suede texture in the lace area. They’re both super light and extremely flexible.

The only thing that’s off is the extra suede detail that the California has in the toe area.

On the closer look, however, the differences become more apparent. The 78 has a solid, uniform sole, unlike the Limber Up, which has a couple of hole on each side. Its upper is made of mesh, not nylon.

According to the details released by the company, this was the first mesh shoe in the world. I have a hard time actually believing that, but I can’t prove them wrong at this time.

The Jogging boom of the late 70 and the Onitsuka Tiger California 78

I’ve seen this with KangaROOS too. Both companies talk about this ‘jogging craze’ that swept the nation in the 70s and the 80s and how they’ve been at the forefront of this movement.

I don’t know about that… weren’t people trying to stay in shape before that? Somebody actually had to stand up and say “all right, from now on, we’re all going to be jogging”?

Regardless, the shoe we’re talking about here is called Onitsuka Tiger California 78 OG because that’s where people really embraced this sport. It makes sense… who wouldn’t want to be running on those beautiful beaches? Ok, back to reality.

What this shoe had and nobody else even thought about of was a small reflector patch on the heel. This way, if you were running in the evening by the side of the road, you stood a good chance to actually survive and arrive home safely. Well thought.

I’ve noticed something weird.. who do all of these sneakers have that round suede patch in the back? Looks to me like a place where they could have placed a logo or something.

Hey, wait a minute… is that the reflector patch they are talking about? Yeah, that’s highly probable.

Anyway, Onitsuka Tiger reissued the California 78 OG. The shoe has all of its original details and, on top of that, it features a small metal patch commemorating its birth state.

Isn’t that a nice touch?

The conclusion?

If you’re looking for a great shoe for your regular jogging practice, go get the  California 78 from Onitsuka Tiger. It is a great choice, a shoe that has more than 30 years of proven results.

Once I got the picture, I started doing some digging and no matter what I did, I kept running into the California 78. Indeed, the 78 was dead close to his pair. Many details were there, including the zigzag suede on the upper.

It looked close, but just not quite.

I was ready to give up and accept that I’d have to tell man that I’ve no idea what his sneakers were, when I decided to take a final look. I swear, the last shoe that I was going to check was the perfect match! No kidding!

It was the Onitsuka Tiger Limber Up Moscow 80 (or Limberup – if you want).

Onitsuka Tiger designed the Limber Up shoe to be used by the Japanese athletes in the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow for warming up. Things like stretching, some jogging, all that stuff.

It was perfect for its job. Lightweight, with a sole that offered perfect grip and a soft fabric that made is super flexible, it was every athlete’s dream.

The shoe featured three ventilation holes in the heel, perfect for shock absorption. That meant less ankle pains and a much more comfortable ride overall.

Well, the Limberup took off after the Olympics and was pretty popular for a number of years after the Moscow Games.

Nowadays, it’s been reissued and is a fantastic vintage sneaker. It has all those old-school traits that every retro enthusiast loves.

What I’ve noticed is that this model is much more popular in Europe. In the US, you can barely find a couple of pairs on eBay and Amazon, while in the UK they’re everywhere.

Asics Limber Up Asian 81

The next year, in 1981, the “4th Annual Track and Field Asian Games” was in full gear and of course, Onitsuka Tiger had everything prepared. It deigned the Asics Limber Up Asian which became the official training shoe for the Games.

It didn’t look anything like it predecessor. This one had mesh upper, different lines, no more zigzags. Completely different shoe.

You will notice the four distinctive tubes in the sole which were supposed to offer better cushioning.

Well, the Asian did its job perfectly. The mesh upper kept its weight low and kept the feet well ventilated and cool.

So this model has been also reissued these days.

They call them Tantalus, after one of Zeus’ sons. Truth be told, that’s a pretty good name for them.

Made with a combination of nubuck and leather, they have this rocky print that makes you shout “WTF?!”. Ok, we’ve seen stranger stuff, like these Sekure D’s shoes or these Mickey Mouse pairs from Jeremy Scott.
